Urban Renewal
Two condo units become one light-filled space over Vancouver's bustling port.

Gastown revs up
“Gastown has become the design epicentre of the city,” says Robert Fung, of the Salient Group, one of the main developers in the district. “There's a growing attitude that this area is where all the talent and creative energy of the city lie.” More...
Vancouver ready to shine
Chambar is busy tonight, as it is almost every night. The funky rooms of this weathered old Vancouver building are crammed with a happy mix of downtown hipsters, uptown society matrons and curious visitors, all savouring the restaurant's signature Afro-Belgian fare and its famous Moroccan-spiced cocktails. Fun Without Games: The Olympics are coming, but Vancouver's great now!
The funny thing about Vancouver is that it doesn't need an Olympics to prove itself.
The city is beautiful, a cozy nest of neighborhoods ringed by water and mountains, equal parts hiking boots and stiletto heels. It has areas ranging from the scruffy and funky to the stolid and settled, a crop of sharp new restaurants doing amazing things with the fresh seafood coming off the docks, and a contented confidence about itself. Double Happiness
With two dedicated bathing rooms, a Vancouver condo owner has the best of
both worlds: big shower, big tub.

The showstopper This condo was once two separate units, and so rather than one long skinny space, homeowner Andrew Patton created two distinct bathroom units: one features the oversize wet room, with its four distinct rainshower heads and Aquabrass shower wand; the second is all about the tub, a BainUltra jetted bath.
Colour Conscious It’s cool and neutral throughout, thanks to the consistency of materials. From the tub and shower surrounds to the counter and backsplash, travertine is the dominant material used in both rooms, while floors are tiled in dark porcelain.
Furnish It A mirror that continues above and below the vanity and basin creates depth in the room. Recessing the medicine cabinet takes advantage of room between the studs in the wall, gaining valuable storage space.
Spa Zone Much of the 1,500-plus-square-foot condo is open concept (Patton wanted to take advantage of views over the port of Vancouver), and the bathroom can be, too. But for more private, Zen-like moments in the soaker tub, frosted sliding glass doors on industrial rails enclose the space. Lit from underneath, the frosted glass becomes a mood-setting light source.
Hidden asset There are both practical and beautiful reasons for the travertine bath surround. The beautiful structure houses the workings of the jetted bath. And in the one pocket of empty space left in the surround, a walnut storage cube holds bathing accoutrements, from towels to soaps and bath salts.
